Borena Sayint Worehimeno National Park
Borena-Sayint National Park, formerly known as “Denkoro Chaka state reserve” established in 209, located in the South Wollo Zone. It is about 600km from Addis Ababa through Debre Birhan and 300km from Bahir-Dar through Merto Lemariam and again 200km south west of Dessie then18 km far from the head office, Mekaneselam, the town of Borenaworeda. The boundaries are Borena, Sayint, and Mehal Sayint.
Altitude
BorenaSaynt National Park is located between 10050'45.4” and 10053'58.3" Latitude and 38040'28.4"and 38054’49" Longitude. The area is characterized by deep valleys and ridges with an altitude ranging from 1900m (buqie) up to 3727m (Yelasgora) above sea level.
The park area is 15262 hectare; highest pick area is 4280 meter (Golate) above sea level.
Climate
The park has three climatic zones: Wurch, Dega and Woinadega due to high variation of altitude. The average temperature falls between 10oc to 20oc and the Rainfall season in every June--September.
Fauna
The area is endowed with 30+ larger mammals, amphibians, reptiles and smaller mammals such as rodents and bats. The endemic mammals of the national park are Ethiopian wolf (canissimenisi), Gelada baboon (Theropithecus gelada), Stark’s hare and Menelek’s bushbuck
Birdlife
There are more than 77 recorded bird species. Some to mention are Gypaetusbarbatus, gypsrueppellii, Stephanoaetuscorinatus, Columba larveta, Bostrychiacarunculate (wattled ibis), Lamer gayer (bone breaker), Abyssinian catbird (parophosmagalinieri), thick billed raven (carvouscrassirostris) Harwood francolin (endemic bird).
Flora
There are about 354 plant species in the park and 63 of them are endemic to this park. The variability of flora is as diverse as range of habitats and altitudinal gradients. The lower forest is dominated by Podocarpus falactus (Ethiopian endemic soft wood) with juniper and olea with increasing olinia as we go higher. The Upper forest is dominated by Rapanea, Dombeya, and Hagenia (endemic tree) moving in to the lower stratum of Erica arboreal forest.
