It is fresh water located outside the Great Rift Valley. It is located 30 km from Dessie.
Lake Hayq is 6.7 km long and 6 km wide, with a surface area of 23 km². It has a maximum depth of 88 m and is at an elevation of 2,030 meters above sea level.
What to See
Hayq St. Estifanos (Stephen) church is one of the earliest Ethiopian Orthodox evangelizing churches. Many prominent kings and Ethiopian Orthodox Church saints attend their religious and monastic education at Lake Hayq St. Stephen Church. Yikuno Amlak who restored the Solomonic dynasty in 1270 AD was attend his church leson and got his coronation here. St. Tekelhaymanot one of the prominent saint in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church who founded the monastery of Debere Asebo (Later renamed Debere Libanos), Aba Giyorgis the gascha who founded the Gascha monastery, Abune Hirute Amelak the one who founded kibran Gebriel at Lake Tana attended their monastic education at lake Hayq.
The clean water of the lake surrounded by beautiful scenery is one of the pulling potentials of the lake. Apart from that, the geographic features such as attractive mountains and gorges at the eastern side of the lake make it one of the scenic places in Ethiopia to travel.
